I've Never Been so Nervous in my Life!

I am more nervous than I have ever been. It seems that not only are my hands shaking but my whole body! They are about to announce the winner of the From Field to Fryer Award at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2017 at a glittering ceremony in London. Krispies is short listed and I have suddenly realized how important it is to bring this National Award back to Exmouth.

The story of this award began many months ago, way back in the summer, when we decided to enter for the first time. We are really proud of the rigour and attention we give to sourcing our potatoes and preparing and frying our chips and the From Field to Fryer award seemed like a good way to see if we really were doing a good job!

The award day begins mid morning with press photos and a drinks reception. The best of the industry are all together and I am extremely proud to be amongst them representing our small family business.

Next is lunch, a wonderful three course meal – despite my nerves my appetite is as excellent and I eat everything – but I do stick to the mineral water despite a strong desire to settle my nerves with a glass of wine or two!

At 2pm sharp the awards start, the From Field to Fryer Award is the second to be announced. The tension mounts not just with Tim and I but also back in the shop where the team are following it all on Twitter – we do not normally allow mobile phones to be used during service but sometimes you just have to break your own rules!

We are being judged alongside the very best in the country, so we have no expectation we will win but then they read out our names. We are shocked, proud and thrilled to be up on stage in front of over 600 industry leaders including fishermen, potato suppliers, oil distributors and of course our fellow Fish and Chip shop owners.

This is not just an award for Tim and I but the whole of the Krispies team. We are a family business and without our staff we could not have achieved this. We would also like to thank all our customers for their support and we hope it won’t be the last National Award we bring back to Exmouth. But in the meantime you can rest assured we will continue to serve amazing fish and chips and will always strive to be better.
